A sinus infection is a condition that occurs when the tissue lining your nasal and sinus passages becomes swollen or inflamed. Symptoms might include a runny nose with thick mucus, facial pain or pressure, and bad breath (halitosis). Your symptoms may be caused by an infection, structural problems like a deviated septum, or allergy-related issues like nasal polyps.신논현역한의원
Acute Sinusitis
Most people who have a sinus infection will get better on their own. However, if your symptoms don’t go away or they come back frequently, you might have chronic sinusitis. In that case, you should see an ear, nose and throat specialist (also known as an otolaryngologist). Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and do a physical exam. They might also order a CT scan of your nose and sinuses or an MRI to help find the cause of your sinus problems. They might also insert a thin, flexible tube with a light at the end (an endoscope) into your nose to view the sinuses and look for causes of blockage.
If your sinus infection is due to a bacterial infection, antibiotics might be prescribed. You’ll typically take them for 10-14 days. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections and won’t help with viral or other types of infections. Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can also help reduce pain and discomfort from your sinusitis.
Your doctor might also test for allergies to determine what is triggering your sinusitis. You might receive a nasal spray or oral allergy medication. For chronic sinusitis, your doctor might also prescribe immunotherapy treatments to strengthen your immune system and prevent allergic reactions that lead to sinusitis.
For chronic sinusitis that doesn’t respond to medical treatment, surgery might be an option. There are several surgical approaches that can enlarge sinus openings and make breathing and draining easier, such as balloon sinuplasty. Other surgeries involve removing bone and tissue or relocating tissue to the right place.라경찬한의원
